Pop Art Summative Icon Person

By Alex Solway
1. What was the influence on him by the culture of the 60’s?
Andy Warhol was one of the pioneers of pop art in the United States during the 1960’s. He started this by using popular and iconic people and items. He used such items as the Campbell’s soup cans, dollar bills, and coca cola cans. He used lots of famous people such as Marilyn Munroe, Tony Donahue, and Elizabeth Taylor. He became very famous in New York and later throughout the US. His artwork was displayed throughout famous museums in New York such as the Museum of Modern Art. Many things influenced him through his life like civil rights movement, headline news stories, and anything that was creating headlines in the media. He became so famous that he opened his own studio in New York with other members of the Factory people including Freddie Herko, Ondine, Ronald Tavel, Mary Woronov, Billy Name, and Brigid Berlin.
2. How does it relate to present day culture?
Andy Warhol’s work still relates to present day culture very well. The things that he worked on such as the coca cola bottle, the Campbell’s soup can, and the dollar bill are still very prominent and recognizable items in society today. Also, the iconic and famous people he used in his work are still famous to this day. Pop culture and media, such as television, new papers, and magazines are everywhere in society. His artwork allowed people look at and interpret things differently.
Why did he do what he did with his art?
3. He did this to make his artwork different than other peoples and to stand out. He started by using cartoon and advertisement pictures and hand painted them with paint drops. He then moved on to doing his art using famous people and famous objects. His objective was reached and people loved his artwork. He became really famous and is now considered one of the founders of pop art and one of the first to incorporate media and the news into his artwork. He combined commercial art and fine art together and basically created commercial art. Before Warhol, the only type of art was fine art and when he came along he made commercial art into a legitimate type of artwork.

Triptych Unit One Summative

Triptych Questions
By Alex Solway
1. Explain what each panel represents around you.
I think that the area on the triptych that could have used more attention is the top part of the left section. It looks a little bit blurred and if I put a little bit more attention on it, it could have looked a bit better.
